paintersWorld Painters Challenge

In 1995, a group of twelve patchwork lovers in various regions of Japan formed the Nihon Heritage Quilters Guild. This group participates in an annual quilt challenge, and every few years, the challenge is extended to include other nations. The World Painters Challenge began in 2013. A list of 30 world-famous painters was chosen, and that list was given to a group of quilters from Japan, France, and the U.S. One painter was assigned to each of 30 quilters in each nation, and each quilter was challenged to design and execute a piece of fiber art either representing a work of their painter or making a design of their choice in the style of that painter. This exhibit is designed to compare the techniques and styles between the nations in representing the work of each famous painter. This exhibit will be touring the AQS QuiltWeek events in 2016. Linda Steller and her sister, Ginny Steller, became the US coordinators of the World Painters challenge in 2013.

paintersFeatured Teacher Exhibit: Elegance in Stitches by Joanie Zeier Poole

Joanie is an artist who has chosen quilting as her medium for 40 years. She learned heirloom machine quilting in 2000. All of her artwork is quilted using a regular size domestic sewing machine. It exhibits original images and quilting designs that express stories; these are visual narratives of loved ones.
Joanie has spent 15 years perfecting her refined free-motion quilting skills. She shares her expertise with thousands of students in the classroom, in her books and How-to DVDs, in a line of Quilting Designs Collections, and now as an instructor for!

Cherrywood Challenge 2016: The Lion King:

Cherrywood Fabrics in conjunction with The Disney Theater Group challenged quiltmakers to be inspired by the stunning artistry, vibrant colors, and exhilarating choreography of Broadway’s Award-Winning Best Musical, THE LION KING.
The Challenge: The quilts must measure 20” x 20” and must be made from Cherrywood Fabric (white of another brand can be used since Cherrywood does not have white fabric). At least 60% of the quilt must be comprised of the four challenge colors of Cherrywood Fabric; other Cherrywood fabrics may be added. Any technique may be used as long as it maintains the character of a textile quilt; embellishments such as beads and ribbon may be added – no glitter.
One hundred twenty (120) quilts from this Challenge will debut at AQS QuiltWeek in Grand Rapids 2016, and will be displayed at AQS QuiltWeek events for one year. Select quilts will be displayed at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway for the 20th Anniversary Celebration of The LION KING!

New Quilts from an Old Favorite: New York Beauty from the National Quilt Museum

Nearly everyone remembers sleeping under a quilt made by their mother or grandmother, and many of those quilts were made from time-honored traditional quilt designs. Today’s quiltmakers were challenged by the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky to create original quilts based on the classic New York Beauty block pattern.
The Museum is delighted to present “New Quilts from an Old Favorite 2016: New York Beauty,” an exhibit of the 18 finalist and winning quilts by quiltmakers who responded to this challenge. These are not your grandmother’s quilts! Quilters modified New York Beauty block designs in imaginative ways, providing a wonderful look at the skills, techniques and creativity of today’s quiltmakers. Support for the contest is provided by MODA Fabrics and Janome America, Incorporated.

Jacobean Appliqué: Patricia B. Campbell Quilts from the Collection of the National Quilt Museum:

Patricia B. Campbell was a quilt artist, well known for her non-traditional style of patterns and use of bold colors. She adapted theorem paintings of baskets filled with fruits and flowers into her appliquéd quilts. Pat was drawn to the fantasy botanicals of the Jacobean style crewel embroidery designs, and adapted those graceful curves and stylized leaves to appliqué designs that won her many awards with her quilts. After her death, her quilts became part of the collection of the National Quilt Museum in Paducah.

Presidential & Patriotic Quilts, Collection of Sue Reich:

Throughout our country’s history, quiltmakers have honored America’s presidents in their quiltmaking. These presidential quilts and patriotic quilts have been made by American quilters. From the presidencies of George Washington through Barack Obama, the quilts help us enjoy American history, and reflect on how quilt history has chosen to remember the U.S. presidents and other patriotic events.
