Based on a quilt by Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston STRING-PIECED BASKET, this contemporary quilt owes its concept to two very traditional ideas: the string-pieced block and the four-block setting. Create triangular foundations and cover them with strips and strings of bright, knock your socks off prints. The curved handles provide a nice change of pace to make this block really an eye-catcher. In class you will finish one 14 square block of this sixteen block quilt.

ALL students need to bring a child’s drawing to class with them—any child’s drawing! In this class we will use bright fabrics just because we love them, and we’ll cut freehand all the items that the child put into that drawing. We’ll ignore the “proper” colors for sky, land, water, buildings, and even people! Along the way, students will learn the four principles of design and the “magic” rule when using color. If you are like some quilters and Pantograph quilting is just not your thing, then join Jodi to learn some amazingly simple ways that you can do pantograph-type freehand quilting, without having to follow a pattern. There is no math involved or worrying about lining up pattern rows. With very little marking, you will work the whole way across the quilt without having to stop. Use the blocks and piecing within the quilt as your guide. This is not an allover stipple/loops background fill type of quilting-—these are open, flowing designs that will move across your quilts. Jodi will show you how to easily interlock your quilting to avoid the “rows” look. We will also discuss how these same ideas can be applied to custom quilting for blocks and borders. You are going to love how easy and beautiful panto-less quilting is, not to mention how quickly you will be able to complete your quilts. Students should be comfortable quilting basic feathers and leaves.

Whether you are making your own modern quilts, or have been receiving them from your customers, Jodi will show you some amazingly SIMPLE freehand designs that are very adaptable, and effective, in achieving texture and movement in the often irregular shaped piecing, and large areas of negative space found in many modern quilts. You will learn the basic designs, and then, how you can add to them to create more complex variations, depending on the look you want to achieve. Discuss using the same clues needed with traditional quilts when deciding on a quilting plan such as looking at fabric patterns, and piecing shapes within the quilt for inspiration. You are going to be amazed by the adaptability of these very SIMPLE designs.
