In this class, students will paint a variety of translucent surfaces and fibers, including silk, Lutradur, Spunbond, and Mul•Tex. You’ll then learn how to layer them to blend colors and create a fiber collage. Materials fee includes surfaces and fiber materials for class, plus paints, inks, and other art supplies to use in class. Joyce’s enthusiasm for color exploration is infectious. Through her technique-oriented lecture and multiple examples, students will learn methods for transforming plain yardage into one-of-a-kind fabric that can be used in any project, from traditional quilts to art quilts or innovative wearables. Students will then experiment with all the techniques required to start making a 12” Tree of Life quilt block, which can be completed at home. Using several applicator tools, various media, Tsukineko® inks, and TSC stencils, students will be inspired to create unique fabrics that reflect their own color and design choices.

You will be using brilliant colors of Tsukineko Inks and a variety of TSC Designs stencils in this creative, hands-on workshop. The color blending and shading methods shared during class will allow you to produce dramatic layered stencil effects and soft rainbow color gradients. This fun class will stimulate your imagination and expand your ability to create beautiful surface designs. You will be surprised by how easy it is to use these inks, tools, and techniques to enhance your fiber art. Join world-renowned artist Hollis Chatelain as she shows you how to paint with Procion dyes on cotton and control the dyes for a beautiful effect. Among other things, Hollis will cover blending, layering, special effects, and painting without bleeding while using no resists. All of these techniques can be used to create images as complex as portraits or as simple as a line on a scarf. Each student is asked to bring two or three 18″ x 20″ designs or drawings that they will transfer onto cloth and then paint. These drawings can even be drawings from a coloring book as students will be concentrating on how to apply the dyes. Students will leave with an original painted piece that can be worked into a one-of-a-kind vest, quilt, or pillow top. Lunch will be provided.

We’ll start with a blank piece of paper, and by the end of class, you will have designed your very own original quilt! Yes, it really is that easy. With just a little guidance and some creativity, you’ll soon be on your way to designing many original quilts. This process can be used to create both appliqué and wholecloth designs. Karen will share information on the next steps after the initial design, and will also share some tips on proceeding from design to fabric.
