Discover the unique art and learn the history and traditions of Hawaiian Quilting from the islands. Carrie will share the stories of how Hawaiian quilting began: the meanings behind the patterns, all superstitions and kapu (taboos) in making them, while displaying her own Hawaiian quilt collection. Learn how to cut a Hawaiian block from a ¼ fold pattern, the traditional and modern Hawaiian basting methods, and “needleturn appliqué the Hawaiian way.” This is a worry-free hand appliqué class. The traditional Hawaiian appliqué method is unique in every way.

Mola is a traditional art form from the Kuna Indians of San Blas, Panama. Discover the Kuna reverse appliqué method of hand appliqué. Traditional “Molas” were made as blouse panels for women’s clothing. Now they are intricate works of art used in quilting, clothing, and home décor. This 16” x 20″ class project will cover layering multiple fabrics, reverse cutaway, and channel inlay hand appliqué.
