The new and revolutionary Amazing “Heat-Set” Machine Appliqué technique designed by Grace creates quilts easily and quickly with the raw-edges. It is easy, foolproof, and the results are amazing. This technique leaves the quilt and the fabric soft and manageable, not stiff and boardlike, as fusible webs and glues do. In this class you will go through the entire process of creating a quilt. Starting with the pattern, creating the templates for fabric cutting, and then using this technique to create the quilt top. In the last portion of class, Grace will demostrate different quilting options to appliqué the shapes to the background, and complete the quilt by showing you a number of different edge-ing options including 3-D flanges and “free” edge bindings.

Machine embroidery adds personality to your quilts and needlework. The stitches you choose affect the emotion and atmosphere of your work. In this workshop we will make a simple sampler using a repeated leaf appliqué, but by changing the finishing embroidery stitches each leaf takes on different personalities and attitudes. Sample some stitches you have never tried before and try to find the stitches which speak your language to make your needle projects more expressive.

You will see many antique and vintage quilts, some of which leant inspiration for Kelly’s book. You will become familiar with the shapes other than hexagons, diamonds, and triangles that morphed into the more than 80 blocks found in her book, and you will see many of Kelly’s original quilts born from those blocks. Kelly has redrafted the block into two sizes: a larger block that is made from a Layer Cake square plus background fabric, and a smaller block that is made from a Charm Square plus background fabric.
