The cornucopia, or horn of plenty, is the third work in Deborah’s Baltimore Album series. A symbol of abundance and nourishment, this design celebrates the symbolism stitched into Baltimore Album quilt blocks of the 19th century, including the pineapple, which means “welcome,” and the acorn which symbolizes loyalty. This piece includes specialty threads, beads, and colorful, luscious felted wool and it will be a stunning topper for any surface. Students will learn to make freezer paper patterns, create placement guides, and work with templates. A variety of basting techniques will be presented for increased accuracy. In addition, students will be encouraged to embellish the rug using beads, specialty threads, and unique stitches in their own style to truly make the piece unique. Students will learn appliqué methods including the tack stitch, Deborah’s signature needle slanting techniques, and fabric layering and trapunto stuffing methods for adding dimension to the work.
