Pin cushions have been a staple of sewing baskets for hundreds of years. From millinery to dressmaking to quilting, every stitcher has a need of a hearty pin cushion. Felted wool makes a perfect pin cushion as the needles slide into felted wool yardage like butter, making it easy to remove and return pins quickly. These two pin cushions feature fancy embroidery bands that decorate the sides and two different floral designs for the top. Although they are shown in white, they are equally beautiful in black. Students will have an opportunity to choose the colorway and design that appeals to them and learn how to add these embroidery bands with ease using embroidery guides. Students will learn to make freezer paper patterns, and work with placement guide templates and learn basting techniques for increased accuracy. Specific surface embroidery stitches (such as the colonial knot) and needle slanting techniques for adding dimension to the work will also be taught. Tools that make working in felted wool easy and fun will be introduced. Traditional surface embroidery stitches will also be used and the construction of the final pin cushion will be fully discussed. This is a new work and is included in Deborah’s second book Dimension in Wool Appliqué Baltimore Style.

This colorful chatelaine in luscious navy-blue felted wool includes a signature large enough for others to easily read. Housing a needle book, pin cushion, scissors holder, thimble or spool holder, and a magnet to rest your needle…it is a perfect solution for meetings and stitch-ins. The chatelaine folds and fits into a companion orts holder for easy travel. Decorated with springtime charm, this chatelaine is warm for winter and will not shift while worn. It is also a great place to add those chapter and seminar pins. Students can choose colors from over-dyed felted wool fabrics in a variety of colors and create a signature chatelaine that is personalized in design. Embellishing will be individualized using wool threads or students can follow my own design incorporating flowers, decorative trim, a spider web, and a ladybug.

Tesoritos means tiny treasure in Spanish, as the treasures of the needle worker are her tools and petites. This miniature Needle Book is aptly named as it was inspired by the colorful Mexican art Deborah saw while visiting San Antonio, Texas. The bright colors and spirals arranged in fantasy flower combinations made this project fun to stitch and useful as a gift to a stitching friend or a personal stitching accessory. We stitchers love our fun little stuff. Procedures in felted wool appliqué including tack stitch methods, her signature needle slanting techniques, surface embroidery tips including embroidery guides and easy and accurate buttonhole stitching will be presented. Mastering the colonial knot, cutting small pieces and accuracy in surface embroidery will also be covered. Tools that make working in felted wool easy and fun will be made available and the construction of the final book will be fully discussed to prepare all participants to be able to “finish!”
