This class is great for beginners as well as those wanting to stitch from the front of the machine. Karen’s techniques will help you improve muscle-memory while increasing confidence. By the end of the class, you will have a full library of go-to stitches and no more fears of quilting! Bring a notebook and pen to class for doodling practice before the fun on the machines begins.

In this design-and-draw class, Karen will share her love of doodling and demonstrate why it is an important part of hand-guided quilting. Students will practice basic shapes, then begin to elaborate on each one by adding their own individual styles. Doodling is a useful way to practice as well as discover many new quilting fills, and this class will get you started on your way to creating new beautiful designs for your quilts.

Fills are fantastic, fun, and functional, too! Whether filling oodles of empty space or accentuating beautiful appliqué, fills are a very necessary part of quilting. In class, Karen will share many of her favorite background fills, including her signature fan fill, as well as combining fills for maximum effect. She will also discuss density and scale of various designs and when to know which to use.

We’ll start with a blank piece of paper, and by the end of class, you will have designed your very own original quilt! Yes, it really is that easy. With just a little guidance and some creativity, you’ll soon be on your way to designing many original quilts. This process can be used to create both appliqué and wholecloth designs. Karen will share information on the next steps after the initial design, and will also share some tips on proceeding from design to fabric.
