Philippa Naylor

Spring Paducah 2019

Born in Yorkshire, England, Philippa discovered a love of sewing and knitting when she was young. A gift of a sewing machine on her 13th birthday enabled her to progress from making dolls’ clothes to making garments. Trained as a clothing designer, Philippa worked as a lingerie designer before marrying and moving to Saudi Arabia, where she made bespoke wedding and evening dresses and by chance learned to quilt. Soon after, she began combining her technical expertise with her designer training to create intricately pieced, appliquéd, and wholecloth quilts.

Philippa is honored to have three quilts in The National Quilt Museum in Paducah. She has won many top quilting awards; written two books, Quilting in the Limelight and Appliqué Mastery; and fills her days—now back in Yorkshire—with as much creativity as she can, including lots of teaching, gardening, cooking, and sewing. Philippa says, “Anyone who gets quite good at anything does so by lots and lots of practice. Persistence is the key!” See her work and more at philippanaylor.com.
