Mark Sherman is an international award-winning quilter, author, teacher, and lecturer. His quilts express his love for color, design, and creativity. He fell in love with quilting after seeing a donation quilt from a local quilt guild at a Christmas show. Instantly Mark knew that even though he knew absolutely nothing about sewing or quilting, it was something that he wanted to do. The journey was not always easy or successful, but following his favorite quote from Winston Churchill, “Never, never, never give up,” Mark continued to pursue his dream of becoming a quilter. Join Mark for a hilarious overview of a man quilting his way through this “women’s world.” Mark uses this lecture as an excellent opportunity to encourage his audiences to pursue their own dreams. His belief is “If I can do it, you can, too, and here’s how.”

You’ve seen him before: he’s the quiet, soft-spoken guy with the fuzzy afro hair, painting mountains and trees with big brushes in a matter of seconds. Bob Ross is public television’s most beloved personality. This docu-story reveals the personal life of Bob Ross through the loving accounts of close friends and family, childhood photographs, and rare archive footage – what you know: his unwaivering dedication to wildlife for example, and what you don’t know: Bob Ross’ straight hair, his fascination with fast cars, and so much more. You’ll see rare film clips of Bob Ross with mentor William Alexander, and the very first rough-cut “Joy of Painting” episode. And you’ll learn how one little TV commerical to advertise local painting classes slowly turned this gentle-mannered fellow from simple beginnings into a viral phenomenon that continues to allow millions around the world to realize their dream of becoming an artist. Bob Ross: The Happy Painter is a 60-minute film presented in three parts: The Man, The Television Artist, and His Legacy.

The Lancaster Diamond Sampler Quilt: Honoring Friends, Family, and Freedom – #21808

Day: Friday, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
Location: Heritage Ballroom C
Teacher: Ann Holte
Level: All Levels

Member: $12 Retail: $15

Join quilt historian Ann Holte for a fun lecture and trunk show built around a Lancaster County treasure. The Lancaster Diamond Sampler Quilt is one of a small group of similar quilts that were made in Lancaster County in the mid-1800s by a group of quilters who referred to themselves as the “girl cousins.” They were friends and family, old and young, new quilters and experienced quilters, who got together to visit; to eat; to share knowledge, fabric, and patterns; and to work on quilts. Ann fell in love with this quilt and has been studying it and making the 173 different blocks since 2009, and she keeps discovering more interesting and mysterious features every day about the quilt and the unknown quilter who created it. Ann will discuss the history of the quilt and various techniques used to create its unique designs. You will learn some surprisingly easy geometry and take the Mystery Appliqué Quiz. The Lancaster Diamond Sampler Quilt will remind you why you got into quilting in the first place. Supplies are not required for a lecture, although you may want to bring a pen and paper to take notes.
